How Snow and Ice Can Impact Your Roof

The winter can take a significant toll on your house’s roof. Snow and ice damage on your roof can cause serious issues for your home. Here are some ways that snow and ice negatively impact your roof:

Stress

Although we are unlikely to get enough rain and ice to cause structural stress, the weight can still impact the life of your roof. The traditional pitched roof style will send snow and ice down the roof, but once the temperature drops below freezing, this can form large ice blocks.

Leaks

As snow and ice melt, the water can get underneath your shingles.

Leaks can also happen if your gutters are not well-maintained, then melting ice and snow will pool on the roof.

Skylights are another common place where leaks can occur if snow builds up.

When heavy ice blocks fall onto your roof, the roofing material can get ruptured and cause leaking.

Ice Dams

Small problems can have a much bigger impact if left unchecked. Ice dams are a ridge of ice that forms around the roof’s edge and prevents snow from melting and running off as it should. Ice dams can cause major gutter damage and tear the flashing off the roof.

Before winter arrives in full force, we’d recommend having one of our friendly roofing contractors visit your home to make sure that your roof is in the proper condition to handle the winter.
